Base Pair celebrates launch at NTCA Darwin
Last week, the team at Base Pair Genomics donned their corporate Crocs and made their way north to attend the 2025 NTCA Conference in Darwin. There, they joined a vibrant and diverse group of over 1,000 industry leaders and producers from across the nation.
Genomics For Every Producer : Base Pair Genomics Manager, Elsie Vincent, was invited to speak at the Field Trip on Thursday morning. Beatrice Hill, a 2,600ha NT DAF research station located southeast of Darwin on the Arnhem Highway, served as the backdrop for this informative session.
Elsie’s presentation focused on demystifying genomic testing, with the aim that attendees would leave with a clear understanding of "genomics" and be able to explain it to their mates at the pub that evening.
Genomic testing is rapidly gaining momentum in the north, especially considering the demand for herd insights where physical data is sparse. The ability of a genomic test, like Base Pair's RePRO BI product, to provide predictions on herd performance traits linked to fertility, growth, and adaptation from a simple ear notch or tail hair sample was well-received by producers at the launch in Darwin.
The field trip attendees also had the opportunity to explore the latest NT DAF research and biosecurity initiatives. Discussions covered innovative topics like virtual GPS tracking collars for monitoring cattle behaviour, projects focused on reducing calf loss in the north and addressing the impact of buffalo fly.
After a steamy morning in the Darwin heat, field trip attendees returned to the convention centre to join the remainder of the Nutrien Ag Tech and Tea talks, which focused on harnessing technology for economic and social growth, data-driven decision-making, and sustainability. It was exciting to see growing interest from producers eager to utilize platforms like Black Box and Base Pair to leverage their on-farm data and improve their bottom lines.
Fostering Lasting Connections:
Throughout the conference, the Base Pair Genomics team had the opportunity to celebrate the launch and connect with existing clients, further strengthening relationships during their time in the north.
Central Queensland producer Geoff Maynard from 5 Star Genetics expressed his confidence in the continued success of Base Pair Genomics, particularly as a valuable tool for commercial producers.
"Traditionally, genetic evaluation has been somewhat restricted to stud herds, but now commercial producers have the ability to assess the nucleus of their herd or any of their progeny. This is a welcome advent to the industry.”
Bryce Moore, representing the Charbray Society, also reflected on his experience at the conference.
“We’ve had a great couple of days at the NTCA conference, with the opportunity to speak to plenty of producers about their operations and where Charbrays might fit into that,"
“Genomic testing is something that is really gaining traction in our breed at the moment and a space we’re very excited about and it’s great to have the team at Base Pair Genomics on board with us to guide us through.”
In addition to the informative sessions, the conference provided ample opportunities to network and connect, with events such as Crocs and Frocks, the Pioneer Water Tank Welcome Drinks, and the NTCA and AACo Gala Dinner. These gatherings offered a relaxed environment for making new connections and catching up with old friends—especially over a cold one.
Looking Ahead:
The NTCA Conference wasn’t just about gaining knowledge; it was about growth, collaboration, and building meaningful connections.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, spoke, exhibited, and networked with us. Your involvement and passion made the event unforgettable. We’re excited to continue the conversations and collaborations that started in Darwin and can’t wait to see what’s next!
